Southern States Mobilize Firefighting Resources as Oklahoma Wildfire Threat Escalates

As wildfire conditions intensify across the southern region, the South Central Forest Fire Compact has been activated to support Oklahoma’s wildfire response efforts. Kyle Cunningham, Chair of the South Central Forest Fire Compact and Arkansas State Forester, authorized the activation following Oklahoma’s request for additional resources as the state faces critical wildfire conditions and increased wildfire activity.
This activation follows the recent mobilization of the Southeastern Forest Fire Compact on behalf of South Carolina, further demonstrating the widespread wildfire challenges currently impacting the southern region. With strong winds, dry conditions and elevated wildfire behavior forecast, Oklahoma’s wildland fire personnel are working diligently to contain wildfires and prevent further spread. Compact activation allows for efficient movement of personnel and equipment among participating states, ensuring additional resources are available to reinforce local suppression efforts.
The South Central and Southeastern Forest Fire Compacts were established to enhance wildfire response through regional cooperation, allowing states to assist one another as wildfire conditions escalate. By activating these agreements, member states expand their resource capabilities and while maintaining readiness across the region.
As conditions continue to evolve, resource deployments will be adjusted based on operational needs to protect life, communities and natural resources.
