Ensuring Sound Decisions
Science-informed Decisions
Lawmakers and decision-makers need access to sound science and data to make educated, well-informed policies in support of the South’s 245 acres forested land. SGSF advocates for robust funding for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service and other forestry research efforts. We aim for those efforts to be focused on research that delivers tangible benefits to southern forest stakeholders.
Forest Inventory and Analysis Program
SGSF supports the delivery and expansion of the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program, which is known as the nation’s forest census. The collection of FIA data on the status of our forests and the flow of wood products around the region is of utmost importance in making sound policy decisions on forest health, wildlife, fire, economics and many other topics.
Endangered Species Act
SGSF recognizes the connection between sustainably managed forests and healthy wildlife habitat. We support policy development around the Endangered Species Act, and associated species listings, that are backed by sound science and data.
Forest Health
SGSF supports robust funding and efficient program delivery for the many efforts to address forest health threats across the South, including invasive species, pests and pathogens.
